SETTING UP A TEACHING ACTIVITY Educational farms are real agricultural holdings, whose profits come mainly from farmers' work. A part of the farm's time and premises is devoted to hosting school trips, families or other people. The purpose of educational farms is promoting nutrition education activities. Farmers often feel the need to improve communication so as to reduce the growing distance between consumers and producers. Diversifying farm activities should contribute to achieving the goal of increasing farmers' revenues. All these goals shall be achieved by promoting the activities of farms, using specific actions and forms of communication designed on the basis of the company's target users.
BASIC SERVICES The primary source of profit for educational farms is, in most cases, production. Nevertheless, farmers themselves, helped by their families and/or by animators, host various trips from local schools. As in every business activity, creating an educational farm entails defining a business project, according to the farm’s skills, bearing in mind the needs that the farm wants to meet. Educational farms must comply with quality standards in order to ensure a successful visit and client’s satisfaction.
Each farm should meet the following requirements:
Eco-friendly Farm Using organic or integrated farming systems or quality local crop productions.
Welcoming Farm Providing a warm and sheltered place where learning activities can be carried out in case of bad weather, throughout the year.
Fully equipped Farm Having all the necessary furniture and toilet facilities for guests.
Education at the farm Offering one or more “active” learning activity, according to the age of students, on the following topics: environmental education, taste education, rural education. Educational farms become the ideal place where people can learn and live an amazing experience in the field.
Safe Farm Complying with the existing health and safety regulations; using access limitation or danger boards, where needed. Moreover, farmers should ensure they carry out the necessary risk assessment, including risks of food poisoning.
